Contact your local authority Road Safety Department / School Travel Adviser for general advice and information about grants - they may well have funds allocated to provide high visibility clothing or be able to give or loan you enough for a class. Local authorities are most likely to help you if you have a particular project, like setting up a walking bus or if you regularly take pupils on outings or pupils need to walk to sports fields through traffic. In some areas responsibility for road safety may be shared by a county and district/borough council - so you may need to contact both.

Awards For All - National Lottery funding may be possible.

Department for Transport - travel information and advice for schools from the Department for Transport.

Grants available from local authorities

Schools can access funding through the Department for Transport grants for walking Initiatives and walking buses, but this has to be made through the local School Travel Plan Team.

There are also a few other local sources of grants:

Leeds City Council does not provide funding for high viz clothing for schools, youth clubs etc but does provide high viz vests for Walking Buses.

Essex County Council now has over 100 Walking buses across the county with over 1600 pupils walking. ECC supplies high visibility clothing for the walking buses.

North Ayrshire Council - 'Go On Get Out There' grant scheme - up to £500.

Ways of funding high visibility clothing for your pupils.

How to get your children wearing high visibility waistcoats:

1) Your school could bulk-buy high visibility waistcoats. This would bring down
the cost to parents - it should be possible to get the price below £2.50 each
(without printing). The school could possibly sell them to parents for a small
'profit' to increase school funds.
2) Suggest parents buy high visibility vests direct from us in your school newsletter (giving our website address www.chesterford.co.uk).
3) Grant aid is often available to schools (for example from the Department for Transport). Such grants may be limited to capital expenditure - i.e. items fixed at the school such as cycle racks.
4) Could the school itself appeal to local businesses to find a sponsor? Incidentally, printing on the waistcoats does increase the cost considerably, so it might be best if the sponsor were happy to have no logo on them (they would still benefit from publicity associated with the donation).

School Travel Plans

School Travel Plans

A school travel plan (STP) is a document setting out a package of measures for reducing the number of car trips made to a school or a group of schools by pupils, parents and staff and helping to provide a safer route to school. Parents may be concerned about the safety of walking or cycling to school - providing pupils with high visibility clothing will improve their safety.

School travel plans are not only about transport, they are also about improving health and the benefits to the environment and local community.

A joint Department for Education & Skills and Department for Transport policy aims for all schools to have a travel plan in place by 2010.
